Costa Rica 2019, Yoga and Surfing - SOLD OUT
The Bodhi Tree Yoga Resort, Costa Rica - December 14th - 21st, 2019
I am extremely happy to invite you to one of the best experiences I can imagine - a yoga and surfing retreat in gorgeous Costa Rica. This will be our 6th year going back to the gorgeous Nosara coastline and we cannot wait to be there with you.
Personally, creating this retreat has been a dream of mine. I have developed a passion for the art of surfing over the past years living in Santa Cruz, CA (one of the world's top surfing spots) and for this special retreat, I will be combining my efforts with the iconic big wave surfer, Richard Schmidt. Richard is a renowned surfing champion, master teacher and wonderful, big-hearted person.
Whether you are brand new to surfing or very experienced, you will get so much out of this week. And the yoga we will do on our mats will, of course, be the perfect compliment to the yoga we do out on our boards.
Join me for this week of exquisite beauty & rejuvenation; inspiration on our mats and exhilaration on the water. See you there!
Each day will include:
- Vinyasa Yoga Sessions
- Surfing Session (these sessions will be scheduled by ability level and by the tides)
- Meditation Sessions: Instruction and Practice
- Incredible nourishing meals
- And of course time for relaxation, bodywork, and enjoying the beach and all the beauty a place like the Bodhi Tree Yoga Resort has to offer
"In our fear we believe that we must make things happen; in our practice we learn to let things happen." ~ Rolf Gates
The yoga will be a synergy of dynamic flow and alignment-focused sessions dedicated to facilitating within us the vibrant aliveness so unique to a yoga practice.
You will be grouped by experience level to maximize your experience and growth out on the water. Richard Schmidt and his staff will be working in smaller groups to support the development of each surfer - new to advanced.
All surfing equipment is provided - no wet suits needed - this water is warm!
"Meditation is not forcing the mind to be quiet, it is bringing our attention to the quiet that is already there." ~ Deepak Chopra
In a life that works from the inside out meditation is indispensable. At its essence meditation is simply the willingness to listen, to feel, to see, to take an interest in what is happening right now. The first yoga teacher in the U.S. said "You yourselves are the beings that you seek" and that truth is felt directly just by getting still and feeling into, bringing our attention into, the quiet that is already there.
Unfortunately many of us feel as though we have had a hard time with meditation. The meditation instruction and meditation sessions this week will be dedicated to bringing down the barriers some of us have to meditation and deepening the practice of those who are already meditating regularly. As our understanding of meditation deepens we will come to see that it is a means for allowing ourselves to be that which we have become.
A Final Word:
Most of came to yoga to find peace and health and you would not be reading this if you had not found both just by spending some time on your mat. And that would be enough if we did not have jobs, families, bills to pay, along with expansive visions and dreams we would love dearly to see happen in our lifetime. How do we care deeply about the people places and things of this world and remain peaceful and joyful at the same time? Connected to the truth of who we are, unwilling to move out of alignment with that truth, there is literally nothing we cannot do, be, or have. It is not necessary that we move into this posture all at once we need only be willing to move in that direction. This week we will start moving.
Immerse yourself in over 8 acres of striking landscaped grounds dotted with flowers, large Guanacaste and Pochote trees, waterfalls and gentle streams, all conducive for quiet contemplation, meditation and to just "be."
Night time creates a spectacular perspective of the lap pool. Sunset over the Pacific Ocean — there's nothing like it!
Take a short walk to the expansive sands of Playa Guiones, where the gentle waves of the Pacific Ocean invite you to go swimming or, in our case, surfing! The Bodhi Tree Yoga Resort is located on Costa Rica's Nicoya Peninsula–just a short walk down to Playa Guiones (Guiones Beach).
The Bodhi Tree Yoga Resort is majestically positioned on eight breathtaking acres of large Guanacaste and Pochote trees and features 3 waterfalls and streams that run throughout the grounds.
All accommodations include private bathrooms (private to room or connected and shared with 1 or 2 participants) and outdoor private showers in each bungalow, air conditioning, free Wi-fi, stone sinks from Bali, fresh linens and bedding that will give you the well-deserved rest you are looking for.

Frequently Asked Questions
The program begins at dinner Saturday, December 14th and ends mid-morning on Saturday, December 21st. Most participants try to arrive on the afternoon of December 14th and book flights after 1pm on December 21st. However, we are aware that some travel may require you to arrive a bit later or leave a bit earlier. You may also arrive Thursday, December 2nd or stay later, but must make separate, individual arrangements/reservations directly with the Bodhi Tree Yoga Resort to do so.
Yes, absolutely. We always have a good group of 'never-evers'. The Bodhi Tree Yoga Resort, with its warm water and beautiful beaches is the absolute best place to learn! (Richard and his team are perfect guides for brand new beginners).
Flying In and Out of Costa Rica
There are two international airports in Costa Rica: Liberia International Airport (LIR) and San Jose International Airport (SJO). Both airports have frequent flights from all over the United States and Canada.
The closest airport to Nosara Yoga Institute is Liberia International Airport (LIR). It is only a 2 hours scenic drive from the Bodhi Tree Yoga Resort. The Bodhi Tree Yoga Resort runs group shuttles. Closer to the retreat, we will collect your travel information and send you shuttle options for the ROLF GATES/RICHARD SCHMIDT YOGA AND SURFING RETREAT. Individual taxis are also available and we will provide you with English and Spanish directions if you are using that option.
San Jose International Airport is an alternative option as sometimes flights from the US or Canada to San Jose can be cheaper or more direct. However, there are NO Bodhi Tree Yoga Resort group shuttles from/to San Jose Airport, so getting to the Bodhi Tree Yoga Resort by road is more costly (private taxis or rental car) and takes 4 ½ hours. An alternative is taking a short plane flight from San Jose to the local airport in Bodhi Tree Yoga Resort (the local airport is only 15 minutes taxi ride from the Bodhi Tree Yoga Resort).
There is a departure tax to be paid of $26 at San Jose or Liberia airport when you leave Costa Rica. It needs to be paid in cash (US$ or Costa Rican Colones) or with credit card at the airports on your departure day.
Flying to Nosara: You may take a 40 minutes flight to the domestic Nosara Airport, which is at a 15-minute drive from the Bodhi Tree Yoga Resort. (It usually requires arriving in San Jose the night before and then taking a morning flight to Nosara to assure making the connection).
There are two airlines with daily flights to and from Nosara. For schedules, fares, and bookings visit www.natureair.com OR www.flysansa.com. Once you arrive at Nosara Airport, there are always taxis waiting that can bring you to Bodhi Tree Yoga Resort. The trip costs $20 per taxi.
