Yoga Teacher Practice and Study Group
With Rolf Gates
New Session Begins: February 21st, 2023
In the last couple of years, I have been struck by the effectiveness of the small-group study. Groups I have worked with have learned quickly and report applying what they are learning in their practice and everyday life with ever-increasing confidence and regularity. I feel as if I have discovered one of the better contexts for learning—a setting that reinforces our natural ability to offer spiritual friendship to one another. In this context, people tend to step up and move toward their goals. In this study group, I combine my passion for this type of learning with my love for working with Yoga teachers.

Course Description
The Format
The format is meant to be accessible and immediately relevant. We will meet remotely on Zoom for just one hour a week for a twelve-week learning cycle. Each week you will also receive a meditation and one or more Yoga classes that will teach experientially the themes of the week. In addition to that, all sessions will be recorded, and a summary of the week will be sent to you so that during the week not only will you be able to take the classes and the meditations, but you will be able to listen to a dharma talk on what we are learning that week. With these supports in place, you will be able to interact with the content experientially on your mat, your cushion, and whenever you care to listen to a podcast.
The Curriculum
The curriculum is divided into three moments that will work together the way steps bring you to where you want to go:
Step One: Practice and Community
The first four weeks are dedicated to examining the relationship between practice and teaching. Each week will look at a specific aspect of practice and how it relates to a specific aspect of teaching. For example, the first week will focus on the practice of non-harming and how it shows up in every aspect of our lives. In particular, we will focus on our relationship with ourselves and how the practice of self-compassion engenders warmth and friendliness within the groups we lead.
Step Two: Theory and Theming
The second four weeks will be a Yoga Sutra study. During these weeks we will be bringing the teachings found in the Yoga Sutras into our practice and into our classes. The themes I bring to my classes are organized by the structures found within the teachings themselves. For example, in a pose, I teach to the body, then the breath, then to the quality of the attention following the order found in the 8 Limbs of Yoga. I will explain how teachers can use this strategy to simplify and refine the theming process and make the Yoga Sutras come alive for their students.
Step Three: Finding the Middle
The aim of the final weeks will be to bring teaching and learning into harmony. I am at my best when I am having as much fun learning as my students. To achieve this, I have to be deliberate about the settings I am creating for my students. Whether it is a drop-in Yoga class on zoom or a seven-day retreat at a meditation center, I do my best when I am teaching something I am excited to learn. In the previous four weeks, we will be looking at the structures that make theming easy and accessible, in these four weeks, we examine how science and educational theory create a blueprint for effective Yoga classes and workshops.
